Issue 14

July 2004

When you need to know the news, read the Nulla-Noos

Here's another exciting issue of Nulla-Noos for you to ponder over whilst you have nothing better to do except watch the rain tumbling down outside.

For those of you travelling to Tassie in October, final payments have been received on time. Thank you very much, and now I'll confirm our booking and send off our payment to lock it all in..

We have 24 Nulla's going to Tassie for a great holiday and a great ride.

Whilst this size group may give a little bit of concern crossing the Nullarbor, in respect of accommodation and re-fuelling, it'll also be a good dry run for the National Rally ride happening in September 2005 in Alice Springs.

As well as leading the Nulla's to the rally, I have been asked to lead members of the Perth HOG Chapter too, and the door is open. This run will not be capped, so it'll be fun, fun, fun, that's for sure.

I have no idea how many members will go for the ride to Alice, but one thing is for sure, it will be an interesting ride, if nothing else.

Should be able to get to Alice Springs in 6 days, with a ½ day look around in Coober Pedy and a detour to Ayres Rock for a sunset and sunrise, but there'll be no mucking around on the road until after Port Augusta.

Those who decide to come can expect normal early morning starts and 750kms each day for those first 3 days.

Nothing unusual for the harden Nulla's, but some of those city-slicker riders might find it a bit hard going.

But we'll get Tassie done first, and worry about Alice Springs later on in the year.

The president of Cascade Brewing [Tasmania], Tooheys [NSW], XXXX [Queensland] and Swan Brewing [WA] were at an International Beer Conference.

They all decided to go to lunch together and the waitress asks what they would like to drink.

The Tooheys Pres. says without hesitation ….. " I'll have a Tooheys New "

The Casade Pres. smiles and says " I'll have a Cascade Draught, brewed from pure mountain water "

The Carlton Pres proudly says …. I'll have a Carlton Crown Lager, the King of beers ".

The Swan Pres. smiles and says …. " I'll just have a Coke ".

The other brewers look at him like he's just sprouted a second head.

He just looks back at them, shrugs his shoulders and says ….. Well, if you blokes aren't drinking beer, then I won't either ……

Every two months, I sit and type this newsletter to you, hoping to enlighten you on things that we and, sometimes, other groups embark on during that time.

As winter sets in on the state, most motorcycle club activities slow down in the area of staging of events and rides to attend.

And we are no different to other clubs, with activities, BBQ's, rides and other outings declining as the wet months set in.

We also tend to concentrate on long distance rides too, and this makes our "other" local activities seem a bit non-existent.

As we are primarily a riding club, it's hard to arrange other types of events during this time of year, and as we have such a wide and varied background of cultures and occupations, this makes things even harder to organise.

Work commitments, family activities, household chores and all the other things that need to be done invariably put paid to other activities that we, as a group, try to arrange.

But hopefully, before we set off for Tasmania in October, we will be able to arrange a ride or gathering of the clan that will suit everybody.

I would like to arrange a breakfast ride to a destination that will suit all, and it will also be a little bit of a shake-down run for those of us that are heading across the country in October too.

Keep a Sunday at the end of August or maybe early September open and we'll see what happens.

How are your old Nullaboy shirts holding up ??

Is it time for a couple of new ones yet ??

As I've been pressured by a couple of members that haven't had the opportunity to dress properly, I've purchased some new ones, and they are now available for sale.

50 in total, and sizes from Small through to 4XL, but as usual, it's first in - first served.

Made from 65/35 Poly Cotton in a good quality material, Short Sleeved, Light Grey with Black Collar and Cuffs and, of course, the Nullaboys logo embroidered above the pocket.

And because I negotiated the price in cash, the cost has been kept down to a very reasonable $ 30.00 per each.

Send your requests via e-mail to wizard@nullaboys.com and I'll put them aside for you so you don't miss out this time.

And I still have some of our magnificent Gold Plated Nullaboy Belt Buckles too, only $35.00 per each.

As this will be the last time our belt buckles will be available, maybe you should consider buying a spare, just in case.

Did you know that we've had the Nullaboys web site for nearly 2 years now, and it's still not finished.

So, because you guys and gals can't send in a photo or two of yourself with just a couple of words about yourself too, I'm going to have to do it for you.

But to do it, I've had to spend a shit-load of money buying myself a digital camera and up-grading the computer thank very much, but I'm going to make sure the Nullaboys web-site is done before this Christmas.

So if you see me sneaking up behind you somewhere with a camera, you'll know why.

Once I've got the pictures, you'll have a couple of days to write the words, or else I'll type something in and, well, you know me, it might not be too flattering.

So, be warned, somewhere, some day, sometime soon, it's going to happen and you may or may not see me sneaking around.

But one thing's for sure, that day's coming, and I'll be looking at you through the eye of my new lens.

The first thing you'll know about it is when someone tells you that you're on the Nullaboys web-site.

Of course you could always save yourself the embarrassment and send your pretty photos and flattering words into spider@nullaboys.com first and beat me to it.

But knowing you lot, I doubt you will …….. Oh well, told ya so

Memberships have flowed in again, and at time of printing, we are sitting at a pretty healthy 44 members.

I did consider capping the numbers at 50 or 60 sometime ago, but every time I mention that " capping " word, I get a cold shiver down my back for some reason.

The bigger we get, the more work involved in keeping it all rolling along.

More newsletters to produce, more stamps to lick, more e-mail addresses to keep up to date, etc, etc.

I suppose it'll happen one day, but if or when the cap goes on I don't know. Each year we get more members and even more inquiries from people wanting to join us.

Sooner or later, we will loose our exclusivity, and end up with people that just want to be known as a Nullaboy to be part of this great establishment.

Membership money is one thing, as it helps provide working capital for things like the shirts, but sometimes I wonder if capping the numbers is the right or wrong thing to do.

The last thing we want is to grow into a group that's to be big to handle when we go for a big ride somewhere.

The Tassie run this year will be the biggest group we've had on a ride east, and I really don't know if it will cause problems with re-fuelling and accommodation on the ride over and back.

A close watch will need to be kept this year, and a decision might have to be made when we get back about future group runs across the paddock with regards to pack sizes.

Regardless it'll be a good experience for the HOG National run to Alice Springs next year won't it ??.

And I suppose only time will tell ……..

Again, thanks to all for paying your final payment for Tassie on time.

It's much appreciated as now I can continue with the booking and hopefully finalise everything in the next 2-3 weeks.

And that means the only left to do is produce the mobile telephone contact cards for the travellers.

If you plan on taking a different mobile than the one I have recorded, please let me know.

I will be in contact with you in a couple of months asking for confirmation of the mobile number for the trip.

Then I'll produce the Mobile contact cards and hand them out on the day of departure. [ Except for the 4 late arrivals, I'll post your's out to you before I leave town ]

In this edition, you will also find your membership card for the 2004 / 2005 season.

And if it's not in here, you're not financial, it's as simple as that.

Yeap, hard to believe isn't it, there are still some slackers out there that haven't paid up.

So you lot better take note … send in your membership dues NOW or this will be the last communication you will receive from the club.

There will be no more e-mails, no more Noos-letters, no more grovelling and no more riding with us on our adventures.

And don't blame me because it's your fault so pay up now or it's bye-bye and I'll cross you of the mailing list.

This is your last chance to re-join.

For those of you how didn't know, our little wog mate Luigi, has left on his world tour.

He left Perth on June 18th and was heading for Auckland for a couple of days, then to Los Angles and then to New York to catch up with some family members for awhile.

He was planning on attending the New York State HOG Rally in flushing some time in August, and trying to do a couple of T shirt trades whilst at the rally.

From New York to Italy for more family gatherings, then down to Sicily to catch up with his wife's family [.and probably re-new his membership with the Mafia.] and gorge himself stupid on REAL Italian food [.lucky bugger.].

From there it's back on the plane and on to Singapore and then back to Perth.

He's 55 or 56 now, and was born in Italy but left as a child of 2 or 3, and he's never been overseas since, so this will be a huge trip and a great experience for him.

Being a wog, he speaks good Italian, but I think he'll get a shock when he starts speaking his Aussie version in Italy and everybody starts looking at him a bit weird.

He's due back into Perth just before the Kalbarri State Rally, which he is planning on attending, and then 2 weeks after that we're off to Tassie.

I don't know where he thinks he's going to fit in time to go to work and earn the money for all this, but knowing him, it won't cause too much of a problem.

Just don't book him for any work when he returns, I think his hourly charge might go up a few bucks for a couple of months until he catches up a bit.

And am I a little bit jealous, too bloody right I am……..

That's it for this edition, I hope it was informative, but if not, stiff shit. Send in something about something and then it might be a worthwhile read.

I hope to see you soon
